On the way home
There is an unexpected space
Where a train passes by
Opening wide
It is a breath for the brain
It is a lonesome call that you crave
It was that cry
Says you gotta open yourself completely
Says you gotta open yourself if you will find what you really need
And it was that beast
It is that beast you need to be
It is that beast
You need
It is that beast you need
Rip your throat out and let it bleed
It is that beast you need
You gotta keep your wits about you
To know which of those beasts are best to leave unfed

deep bright

I know what I love and it is the wind
blowing through the tall grass
we lean into it
I know what I need and it is the deep bright
smell of the dry soil
breathed into me
And I watched myself
as if in a dream
go floating away
I know what I love and it is the gray green
shining off the water
as it passes underneath and through
and I know what I need
and it is the cold breeze
thrown off by that frozen river I saw in that dream
But no matter where I go
when I go far enough away I just feel cold
And I watched myself
as if in a dream
go floating away.

there that ambition
02:59
|
|||
I grew disenchanted with it
yeah, I got so bored even thinking about it
and i knew it was so bad
but still i wanted it
i wanted it so damn bad
that i grew jealous of it
and now i am hunting it
like i will wear its thick skin
yeah, like i will wallow in it
and i've thrown down many scalding paths
but still i've wanted it
there are times i have almost forgiven it
but then i think of all the good folks i know
who've fallen down praying to it
and though i still want it bad and always will
i would be rid of it

derelict
03:36
|

yeah, there is a wildness
that sits in the city
out in the abandoned backyard
of the house where you broke in
and yeah, I'm going to wallow in it
yeah, I'm going to sneak around
tenderly
until I am just covered in
some kind of dark
sin
and yeah, there is a roughness
right where the wrists are bending
hovering in our voices, keeps us wondering
and yeah, I'm going to sit with it
yeah, I'm going to drink it up completely
until I am just swimming in
kindness of a dull thing

puff ball thing
02:46
|
|||
on the day before you left
I watched your freckles as you slept
I rubbed your wrist and wondered where the cartilage connects
and if we were both happiest with me breathing out against your neck
would we ever leave the house again?
well I would
wait
on the day you caught that plane
I heard from some old loves again
a phone call from a friend
and a couple of emails, said:
do we ever change? do we ever become un-snagged?
by the old loves
for many days after you left
I held it hardened in my chest, the solid outline of a moving thing
and if you'd asked I'd tell you how
the days that passed emptied it out
until it was a backyard puffball thing
that I kicked
while I was just
walking
and now that everything is done
and all our curdled wishing gone
I can't bring back the outline of a day
where you would
stay

dreams like a dog
04:00
|

One small bear
his mother was hit by a train
he will not survive, though our limbs move with sympathy
one small squirrel, he falls from his nest in the sky
we put him in a shoe box and feed him with an eyedropper
that one owes an awful lot to the wind
that one owes an awful lot to his animal family
that one moves an awful lot like the wind
that one looks an awful lot like his animal kin
does that boy belong to them?
one small child
wanders off alone in the night
takes shelter under branches from the wicked wind
one small boy
with no one he would surely die
they lead him back to their den and lick his feet clean
and oh when they take him back
his family mourns the loss
sometimes he still hears them calling him
at night through the bedroom glass
he slips from the covers
and curls on the floor
he sleeps in the corner
he dreams like a dog

Oh, in the dark night
we know nothing, we are nothing at all
Hold onto the dark night
we will find it there if we find it at all
climbed to the top of that tall hill
looked across the lay of the land
but I saw nothing, I saw nothing at all
Went to that good place of learning
burned the books or swallowed them whole
but I learned nothing, I learned nothing at all
Oh in the dark night
you will find it there if you find it at all
Wandered all over the east end
kicking trash and upturning stones
but i found nothing, I found nothing at all
Oh i shot down that old rough beast
skinned it and nailed it to the wall
but i felt nothing, I felt nothing at all
Hold onto the dark night
Oh we will find it there if we find it at all
Wandering
When i was done wandering
I went back home
Sitting in the house i was living in
the back door flew open and here’s what i saw
All of the people and places that i had been through
in one terrible roar, singing like:
Come back to the dark night
oh there was something in all that you saw
but if you hold to only the dark night
you will find something there, but there is
so much more

don't shine my light through the open door
don't shine my light through the open door
i won't be there
it will be dusk I know
don't fill your face with the back of a storm
let your throat spill over with sickening moans
i won't be there
i wasn't there at all
don't send my words to them
those shadows on the glass
just send all my best wishes back.
don't cart my bones over bridges back home
mix their clacking talk with the river's rough roar
I won't be there
I will be barking from that far shore
don't feel my hands like they're gripping your arm
don't feel my hands like they're there when they're not
I won't be there
so open your fists
up
then
don't send my words to them
long shadows in the grass
just send all my best wishes back

fine dust rising
04:31
|
|||
before you left
you wanted to know I would be ok
in our hands we held our breaths
two gravely stones
you're in a car you're headed out
I look to where the sun comes up
a taste like dust under the tongue
I didn't see you off, it would have been too tough
and it's a dull haze
where we all are knocking
and it's a rough place
rocks all around
before you left
I wanted to know you would be ok
a smell like mountains on your breath
there was no way of knowing
your head tipped back opened your mouth
a place to let the spirit out
waited till I was not around
it would have been too hard
but it was still hard
and it is still
hard
after you left a silence like dust rose up
an avalanche's aftermath
settled where you'd been last

oh my
02:48
|
|||
we climbed up that hill like riding bikes with both eyes closed
the city lights were all around you
my blood bloomed like ripened seed parachutes
and floated out
soft billowing to you
and as i slept, you started singing:
oh my dear,
it is only love that keep us here
and oh my dear,
there is so much more that makes us need to leave
such explosiveness it didn't stop even as i slept
we rode our bikes, we built a fort
it was the same, but it was warm
then you took me sat me down
said hey lady please remember this song
but 26 words from the shining chorus were all i kept:
oh my dear,
it is only love that keep us here
and oh my dear,
there is so much more that makes us need to leave
oh my dear...
if you feel the pull i hope you follow it.
if you need to go, i hope you do it.
